C06 - Backstage

backstage

Backstage is an exploration of space, where functionality and freedom coexist in perfect harmony. Designed for a young couple with an active lifestyle, this compact home offers flexibility in its use, maximizing every square inch. Its design rejects the concept of a static 'zero' configuration, transforming the room into an ever-evolving, active space rather than a mere container. The home features a versatile layout that accommodates guests, with an additional bed concealed within the perimeter furniture, making optimal use of the available area.
With minimal land use and low energy consumption, Backstage is both affordable and sustainable. The house operates on the principle of providing all the essentials without imposing constraints for the sake of environmental impact. Externally, it presents itself as a simple cabin, but its true innovation lies within. CNC carved timber panels, when adjusted in various configurations, allow the single room to transform into different functional spaces, ensuring maximum utility with no wasted resources.

Every detail is meticulously designed, with an intricate puzzle of storage and functionality, seamlessly integrated through refined mechanisms. Solar panels provide electricity, stored in a backup wall housed in the service room. Rainwater is collected in tanks beneath the floor and purified through reverse flow filtration. Heating is provided solely by an automatic pellet stove, which not only supplies radiant heat but also warms the bathroom through a dual heat exchanger system; one drawing from indoor air, and the other using outdoor air from the chimney.

Pellets are locally supplied and moved via domestic machinery, with a passive flow system ensuring easy, hands-free operation. Constructed from renewable materials such as cross-laminated timber, Backstage boasts high energy efficiency, made possible by its compact footprint and thoughtful spatial organization. This home is a response to the modern desire for simplicity, sustainability, and complete, unrestricted living.
