Home in one room

Backstage is where the real play takes part. It’s a blank space that gives you freedom to dwell as you like. Wherever you want to live, either in the wilderness or in a city, you’ll never need more than one room. The interior has no “zero” configuration. The room is intended to always be used as an active space and not as an empty box.

The home is designed for a young couple, with an active lifestyle, and offers an additional bed for a guest, contained in the perimetral furniture. Using so little land, Backstage is affordable and requires the minimum amount of energy. But, above all, this house provides everything you need for living and doesn’t impose restrictions in order to achieve a low-impact.

From the outside Backstage is just a cabin, but it’s on the inside that lies its unconventional nature. The walls are carved by CNC timber panels and, as you open all of them in different configurations, the one room you have becomes almost every space you would traditionally need.

Like this, your house is 100% used every single time, with no waste of resources. Every palm is then carefully designed and everything is neatly stored, in a complex puzzle of functions, delivered with refined mechanisms.

The house provides electricity with solar panels, which is stored in a power-wall in the service room. Rain-water is stocked in tanks under the floor and is made drinkable with reverse-osmosis filters. Heat is only generated by a pellet-stove, which is automatically operated. The stove provides not only radiant heat but also warm air with two different heat exchangers: one is in-built in the stove and uses indoor air, the other is up in the chimney and uses outdoor air to warm up the bathroom. Pellet should be supplied locally with domestic machinery and then pumped up to the drying space under the roof with a pressure conduct. Combustible then falls by gravity to the stove with a pipe without need for manual operation. Backstage is made out of renewable materials, such as cross-laminated timber, and is highly energy efficient, thanks to the small foot-print and a clever space organization.
