Drawerbox is a modular construction system that integrates prefabricated units with a frame structure built on-site. At the heart of this design lies sustainability, achieved through the use of wooden materials and a modular layout. The approach is highly efficient, thanks to an innovative logistics strategy that allows construction processes to proceed simultaneously, reducing both time and costs, and making the project more affordable. The design is versatile, adaptable in size and occupancy, and suitable for a wide range of locations, from urban environments to rural settings.
The building is essentially an assembly kit, composed of a timber frame, pre-made modules with integrated furniture, and prefabricated exterior panels. Steel is used sparingly, only for joints and reinforcing cables, while the exterior cladding is made from recycled plastic, which offers superior weather resistance compared to wood. The use of cardboard, known for its extreme lightness, significantly reduces dead loads, enabling the construction of taller structures than typical timber buildings.
By not relying on load-bearing modules stacked on top of one another, Drawerbox offers greater flexibility in floor plan configurations. In contrast to traditional stacking systems, where free up space at intermediate height or making post-construction modifications would be difficult, this design separates structural and living functions. The structural frame does not need to be uniformly filled with modules. This allows for variable heights, customizable floor plans, and the possibility to rearrange modules later as needs evolve.
Ecological considerations extend beyond the choice of sustainable materials, such as timber and cardboard, to include bioclimatic strategies. Each dwelling module consists of 25 layers of cardboard wrapped in a single protective shell, providing excellent insulation and reducing energy demand for heating. To prevent overheating, the building is equipped with ventilated facade panels, while balconies and recessed windows protect the glass surfaces from direct sunlight, ensuring a comfortable and efficiently designed interior.
