The restoration and re-functionalization of Piazza XXIV Maggio and Parcheggio Bertini focus on modernizing the city center, emphasizing the centrality and strategic urban importance of these two areas. The project goes beyond merely renovating the pedestrian and vehicular surfaces; it addresses the habits and social life of citizens, particularly in relation to the hiking and resting needs of the thousands of walkers who travel along the Via degli Dei each year.
The redevelopment project encompasses Piazza XXIV Maggio, integrating its connecting spaces with the urban fabric and revitalizing an abandoned lot located below the town center to transform it into a new urban parking area. Piazza XXIV Maggio is defined by the intersection of two provincial roads that shape the urban layout of Monzuno. These roads are currently bordered by narrow pedestrian paths and a few paved areas.
The project proposes expanding pedestrian zones at the expense of the roadway, which is presently oversized in both width and surface area. These changes aim to create a new pedestrian-friendly space in front of the buildings that house the bank, bakery, and main local bars, key gathering points for the community. Meanwhile, the area currently designated for ramblers will be reduced to ensure proper maneuvering space for heavy vehicles crossing the central intersection. A pedestrian crossing will be added near the portico, along with a ramp system to improve accessibility and increase the overall walkable area. Finally, the existing small square will be repaved to ensure material uniformity throughout the intervention zone.
The parking lot will be built downhill from the square and connected to the town center via a staircase and a stabilized path. The redevelopment plan includes constructing a maneuvering roadway and using permeable interlocking pavers for parking spaces. The parking lot will have a maximum capacity of 18 spaces. The staircase leading to the square will feature architectural gabion sidewalls and steps made of architectural concrete.
